Winter Ducks

The Red Shed

The Northeast was extremely cold and windy this winter, and we had some heavy snowfalls. Two weeks ago, a snowstorm swept through our area leaving almost 2 feet of beautiful fluffy snow.

On Saturday, March 6th, however, the temperature rose to the 40’s, it was sunny and most important - it wasn’t windy – Yeah!  So I decided to get out and do some winter plein air painting at the Musconetcong Lake. Packed up and ready to go, I headed down to the Musconetcong Lake and located the best area to set up and paint. I needed to “make the most” out of this warm winter day and chose a wonderful vantage point – all I needed to do was to turn slightly to my right or left and there was another picturesque setting. This vantage point would allow me to do at least two plein air paintings on the same day without having to spend the time moving all my equipment and setting up again in a completely different area.

I started out in the early afternoon. It was very peaceful – there was only one person on the lake ice fishing. On the warm colored, reddish-brown lake, there were quite a few ducks gathered on the cold ice which looked like tiny white dots. That attracted me to do my first painting. I completed an 8 x 10 (called “Winter Ducks”) in about 30 minutes, then turned to my left and aha.. another beautiful lake scene. Since the sun was now directly behind me not only was there a lovely blue shadow from a tree spreading across the frozen lake but the sun also cast a beautiful warm glow against a red shed along the shoreline. I titled my second painting “The Red Shed”.
